UFC 324: Modestas Bukauskas' Incredible Journey | Heart Surgery, Alcoholism, and UFC Comeback (2026)

A fighter's journey: Modestas Bukauskas' resilience in the face of adversity.

The Unbreakable Spirit of Modestas Bukauskas

In the world of UFC, where strength and determination reign supreme, Modestas Bukauskas' story stands out as a testament to the power of the human spirit. This is a tale of a young man's journey, filled with challenges that would break many, but for Bukauskas, it was just the beginning.

Imagine waking up at 19, wires protruding from your body, as doctors perform heart surgery. This was Bukauskas' reality. A young athlete, he had experienced heart palpitations since childhood, and as his athletic career flourished, so did the severity of his condition. But Bukauskas was no ordinary teenager; he had a dream - to make his Lithuanian father proud and become a UFC fighter.

"It was a brutal experience," Bukauskas recalls. "I was awake throughout the entire surgery, feeling those wires in my groin, leading up to my heart. They were inducing palpitations and then burning off an external circuit to fix my heart."

But here's where it gets controversial... Many would have given up, but Bukauskas' determination only grew stronger. He pushed his body to the limit, even enduring extreme heat during basketball training in Louisiana. Despite already being a British kickboxing champion, the heart palpitations worried him, and he knew something had to be done.

"It was a dangerous situation. I was lucky it never happened during my kickboxing fights. But I think it was a sign of the hardships I'd face in the future. It prepared me for what was to come."

Now, at 31, Bukauskas stands on the brink of the most important fight of his career. He faces Nikita Krylov at UFC 324, a fight that could propel him into the UFC's top 15 rankings for the first time.

A Lithuanian Legacy and a Fighting Spirit

Bukauskas' life has always been about mental resilience. Born in Lithuania in 1994, just four years after the country gained independence from the Soviet Union, his father, Gintas, had a unique background. Gintas had competed in No Holds Barred competitions in the Soviet Union, a brutal world of fights and physical feats. This love for combat sports was passed down to his son.

"My father started training me at five. While other kids played outside, I was practicing kicks and hitting pads in our living room. He's always been my angel, guiding me. In every fight, he's the one screaming the finish."

But here's the part most people miss... Bukauskas' journey wasn't always smooth. After resolving his heart issue, he focused on mixed martial arts, but a knee injury and subsequent defeats led to a dark period.

"I spent a lot of time in my room, my knee in a cast, drinking myself to sleep. It was my escape. I knew it wasn't the right path, but I used it as a way to cope."

However, Bukauskas' support system, including his father, helped him emerge stronger. He says, "You ride the wave. When you're at the bottom of the mountain, it looks daunting, but you take gradual steps."

The Baltic Gladiator's Rise

Remarkably, Bukauskas recovered from his knee injury in just 14 months and earned his way back into the UFC. Since his return in 2023, he has an impressive 6-1 record, including four consecutive wins. He believes the injury made him stronger.

"It would have broken many, but I used it as fuel. I've always been pushed aside, so I kept going. Fighting gave me an identity."

This weekend, Bukauskas faces a tough opponent in Russian fighter Nikita Krylov. It's a chance for Bukauskas to showcase his skills and prove his worth. He says, "I'm ready to show the world who the Baltic Gladiator is. This is my time to shine."

As Bukauskas steps into the octagon, his journey serves as an inspiration to anyone facing adversity. His story is a reminder that resilience and determination can overcome even the toughest of challenges.
